Trinity Lutheran Holds Special 9/11 Mass

28p2.previewTrinity Lutheran Church in Astoria held a special September 11th Mass in memory of the almost 3,000 people killed in the terrorist attacks on our country 15 years ago.

 

NYPD officers Sean Marchia-Duckworth, Yuna Lee and Jean-Louis Amedee from the 114th Precinct came to meet the congregation and also answer questions from youngsters representing the Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts of America.

 

Pastor Paul encouraged the youngsters to ask questions, and they asked, "Why did you want to become a police officer? Is it hard work? Do you enjoy what you do?"

Eger Lutheran Homes & Services celebrates a century of caring

Eger Lutheran Homes and Services celebrated its 100th anniversary at a "Red Ball" gala in the ballroom of the Excelsior Grand Saturday evening, where some 600 prominent community leaders, philanthropists and politicos attended to support the cause.

 

The evening sizzled with entertainment, fine food, elegant decor and dancing and was reminiscent of Hollywood's red carpet glamour.

LGBTQ Harlem: Still Queer and Here

"When a person is homeless they’re really just fighting for daily survival," said Kevin Lotz, a social worker and co-founder of Trinity Place Shelter, an LGBTQ-focused youth and young adult transitional shelter.

 

HIV/AIDS awareness, testing, and intervention are very important, but the root is homelessness and its related ills. The unique nature of Harlem, both the history and community, attracts LGBTQ/SGL youth at a high rate, even if they can’t afford to live here.

 

For that reason, advocates want to shift the discussions from testing and prevention, to the risk factors contributing to new infections.

The Jazz Church

Tucked in the massive Citicorp skyscraper at 54th Street and Lexington Avenue is Saint Peter's Lutheran Church, widely known for its jazz ministry. Especially at 5 p.m. on Sunday evenings.

 

That's the time for Jazz Vespers, created back in the 1960s by Pastor John Garcia Gensel. He believed that jazz musicians, who found it hard to come to church on Sunday mornings after working late Saturday nights, would welcome the accommodation.

So said a roadside sandwich board on a sweltering evening in late July outside Incarnation Lutheran Church on Montauk Highway near Bridgehampton. The words could be interpreted a number of ways...

 

"Don't hesitate to go out on a limb, that's where the fruit is." What is it about the Lutherans and their roadside signs? This one was outside St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Greenport, spotted around the time we went to press.

West Village Church Launches 'Eclectic' Concert Series

St. John's Lutheran Church is launching a new fall concert series under the guidance of their new music director/organist, Janet Chung.

 

The church is donating their space at 81 Christopher St. for the performances, so proceeds from the ticket sales go to the artists.
