At the 2010 Synod Assembly, Advent Lutheran Church (located at Broadway and 93rd Street in Manhattan) was awarded the Heart of Ministry Award of Distinction. What made them stand out was that Advent didn’t just have “programs,” but rather were dedicated and persistent in providing an environment where faith is nurtured, can develop and grow. Their ministries to young people start at age 3 with Good News Sunday School and Bible Explorers, and continue through confirmation which includes a week at Camp Koinonia, high school youth group that makes mission trips, and Common Ground, a ministry to young adults that meets on alternate Thursday evenings. These ministries are staffed by dedicated volunteers and paid staff and are funded by the general operating budget of the congregation.
