Child Youth and Family Ministry
A Short History
In November 2003, the Child, Youth and Family Ministry Committee was established to encourage the development of ministries with people of all ages in the Metropolitan New York Synod. Events the Committee has sponsored are: 1. “Toward A New Vision Conference” at the Wartburg in Mt. Vernon (March 2006) 2. “Seminar with Dr. Rollie Martinson (from Luther Seminary, St. Paul, MN),” a three-day event at Koinonia (February 2007) 3. “Synod-to-Synod Servant Event Exchange (SSSEE),” an ongoing three-year exchange between high school students in our synod and our companion synod, Arkansas-Oklahoma. In 2005, a group of 34 young people and adults did servant work in New York City and Oklahoma and Arkansas. In 2006, they celebrated a reunion at Cruzando, the National Youth Gathering in San Antonio, Texas. And in 2007, six young people from our synod did servant work in Tanzania. 4. In 2007, the Committee established the “Heart of Ministry – Award of Distinction”. Two congregations were honored that year for different reasons. Grace and St. Paul in Manhattan reached out to young people on the margins. And Gloria Dei in Huntington Station went beyond their borders to help other congregations with ministry to their young people. In 2008, the award was given to St Phillip's (ELCA) and St Paul's (LCMS on Knickerbocker Ave) in Brooklyn for an annual youth gathering they sponsored together for the past two years. 5. In 2008 and 2009, the Committee started developing a visiting team to help congregations to establish and enhance their child, youth and family ministries. |
