Synod elects Pr. Robert Rimbo, pastor of Holy Trinity, Manhattan, as its new bishop. Read the ELCA News Release.

Recap of Day 1: Thursday, May 15
More than 650 people registered for the 2008 Metropolitan New York Synod Assembly, turning out to elect a new bishop for the first time in 12 years.

On Day 1 -- Thursday, May 15 -- activities included a Bible Study by Bishop David Olson, and the first nominating ballot for Bishop. (Results here.) The balloting was explained and conducted by Pr. Craig Settlage of the ELCA. The day also included a report and presentation by the Tanzania Committee, which celebrated reaching its five-year goal of a $1 million endowment to support our companion synod in Tanzania. 

The meeting began at 1 p.m. with Eucharist, and ended at 9:20 p.m. after Evening Prayer, given by Pr. Wynemah Hinlicky.

Recap of Day 2: Friday, May 16
The second day of the Assembly began with a sermon (
download here) by Bp. Dezso Adorjani of the Evangelical-Lutheran Church in Romania and included third ballot voting for Bishop. (Results here.) 

After the second ballot, the top seven candidates gave five-minute speeches. They included: Pr. Bill Baum, Pr. Jeffrey Kolbo, Pr. Ann Tiemeyer, Pr. Robert Rimbo, Pr. Dianne Loufman, Pr. Bob Wollenburg and Pr. Gary Mills. Three of the candidates are from Synod staff -- Pr. Loufman, Pr. Wollenburg and Pr. Mills.

The day also included a presentation on the companion synod relationship with Romania. The day ended with a Festival Eucharist at Manhattanville College in Purchase.

Recap of Day 3: Saturday, May 17
A new Bishop is selected. Pr. Robert Rimbo, pastor of Holy Trinity, Manhattan, and former Bishop of the Southeast Michigan Synod, was elected Bishop on the fifth ballot. (Results here.) Bishop Buberwa of Tanzania preached at morning worship; click here to read the sermon.
