Preaching the Lectionary: He Comes to Us as One Unknown – Again

09:00 AM - 03:30 PM

The Mercer School of Theology
65 Fourth Street
Garden City , US-NY , 11530

This event will offer preaching insights on the lectionary spanning Advent, Christmas and Epiphany.

"I love that hymn but it also seems to capture what the lectionary tries to do each Advent, reintroduce us to the coming Jesus as if we did not fully know him. We are given his own words and prophecies about him, building on what God had revealed before, and then Jesus bursts on the scene, still unknown but about to reveal himself," writes Professor Robinson of the event.

This joint Lutheran-Episcopal seminar is intended to refresh preachers. Professor Robinson will offer exegetical highlights on selected lectionary passages for Advent, Christmas, and Epiphany. Participants will interact with each other and Professor Robinson in guided conversations about what they are drawn to preach on in the selected passages and why. The day will begin and conclude with worship. The cost is $50; lunch is included.

Dr. Robert Robinson’s interest lies in the theory and practice of interpretation and particularly in the application of current literary techniques to the interpretation of the Bible. Behind that interest is a desire to see the Bible read with understanding and confidence by all Christians. Approaching the Bible as a consummately profound literary work allows the sort of disciplined observation and probing discussion that leads to deeper understanding of the Word of God for our lives.
