Domestic Violence Awareness Task Force

The Domestic Violence Awareness Task Force gives voice to issues of domestic and intimate partner violence that occur in our homes, congregations, and communities. The task force’s ministry provides educational opportunities and resources, raises awareness, and supports efforts in the synod to create peaceful communities.

Are you in an abusive or violent relationship?

If you are in immediate danger or need emergency assistance:

  • Call 911

In non-emergency situations, for 24-hour assistance call:

  • In NYC: 1-800-621-HOPE (4673)
  • National Domestic Violence Hotline: 1-800-799-SAFE (7233)

For more information, help with designing congregational resources, or to join the task force, contact Karri Whipple.

Be an equipped and proactive leader

Recently we talked with Antonia Clemente, Executive Director and co-founder of The Healing Center and asked what a leader might be able to do to be proactive with situations of intimate partner violence.

  • If someone shares with you that they have experienced intimate partner violence, always make sure a person's life is not in jeopardy. Safety is sacred--talk about it. Call for help immediately if their safety is not secure. Organizations like The Healing Center can help them to create a saefty plan for the future
  • Honor their situation and validate their experience. We don’t have words for everything all the time. Just listen. Believe the person.
  • To take proactive steps, invite your congregation to have conversations about intimate partner violence. Antonia Clemente and our Domestic Violence Awareness Task Force can help with these conversations. Use the resources below to learn more and become an advocate.
