As unemployment, under-employment and the recession affect more people, Lutheran congregations throughout Nassau County are regularly partnering with Lutheran Social Services of New York’s New Life Center in Uniondale.

Twenty-four steaming soups. Two hungry judges. One Golden Ladle. Sounds like a new Food Network competition, doesn’t it? But this was the scene in the basement of Messiah Lutheran Church at the Staten Island South Shore Soup Off.

No longer just a hymn title, “Shall we gather at the river?” was recently a serious question asked from one group of Lutherans to another.

St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in West Camp has been served by 47 pastors, worshipped in six different church buildings, produced four seminarians, and seen at least one church fire. And this year, the synod’s oldest congregation—established in 1710—is celebrating its 300th birthday on October 17.

A few years ago, it probably seemed like it would never happen. Emanuel Lutheran Church in Pleasantville was exploring installing photovoltaic solar panels on its roof. The price--$190,000--seemed exorbitant.​

St. Stephen’s Lutheran Church in Hicksville turns 100 this year and, like many other congregations with anniversaries, they have been holding special events to mark the occasion.
