Imagine if, on Halloween, a little costumed character outside your front door thanked you for the candy and then said, “Now I have a treat for you!” and handed you some chocolate in return. Children from the Sunday School classes at St. Luke’s Lutheran Church in New Rochelle have "reverse trick-or-treating"—and educating their community about the importance of fair trade—for the past five years.

A boardwalk pavilion at Sunken Meadow State Park on the north shore of Long Island is the site for a unique summer Bible study that draws members from numerous congregations of the Metropolitan New York Synod. The Beach Bible Study began in 2001, and recently expanded to invite leaders and participants from the Western Suffolk Conference.

Leaders throughout the synod gathered recently to receive a preliminary assessment from our consultants for the synod’s pilot project in the Bronx. The presentation seeks to address a simple question: “How can we remove the obstacles that prevent us from reaching more people who need to hear the gospel of Christ?”

“Come, Holy Spirit” was the theme of this year’s assembly, and it was evident throughout the event. Nearly 600 voting members and visitors filled the grand ballroom of the Hilton Long Island and sang together, “Come, Holy Spirit, lead us…for such a time as this.”

A positive spirit was felt throughout Synod Assembly, May 31-June 1, as over 500 voting members and other congregational leaders gathered at the Westchester Marriott to eat, pray, study, and work together for the sake of our synod.

Long Island Lutheran Middle & High School (LuHi) started its annual Meal Packing Event as a response to the earthquake in Haiti that claimed the life of one of their teacher’s husbands. On April 11-13, LuHi hosted its third Meal Packing Event and this was the largest such servant event yet.

Following Hurricane Sandy, Lutherans throughout the synod were dealing with missing shingles, downed wires, long lines for gasoline, fallen trees, and lengthy power outages. Those that had been spared asked, “How can we help?”

Knowing that piece of information, Pastor Kim Wilson decided to create Blessing Buddies, an intentional ministry to build intergenerational relationships between Sunday School kids and older adults.
