Imagine if, on Halloween, a little costumed character outside your front door thanked you for the candy and then said, “Now I have a treat for you!” and handed you some chocolate in return. Children from the Sunday School classes at St. Luke’s Lutheran Church in New Rochelle have "reverse trick-or-treating"—and educating their community about the importance of fair trade—for the past five years.

A boardwalk pavilion at Sunken Meadow State Park on the north shore of Long Island is the site for a unique summer Bible study that draws members from numerous congregations of the Metropolitan New York Synod. The Beach Bible Study began in 2001, and recently expanded to invite leaders and participants from the Western Suffolk Conference.

In the face of a significantly diminished congregation and a building that would require $10 million to stabilize, St. Luke’s Lutheran Church in Brooklyn closed recently. Plans are already underway to maintain a ministry presence in the Clinton Hill community.

Long Island Lutheran Middle & High School (LuHi) started its annual Meal Packing Event as a response to the earthquake in Haiti that claimed the life of one of their teacher’s husbands. On April 11-13, LuHi hosted its third Meal Packing Event and this was the largest such servant event yet.

On Ash Wednesday, five people from Gustavus Adolphus Lutheran Church in Manhattan walked to Union Square to offer ashes and prayer for anyone seeking the blessing of God.

Following Hurricane Sandy, Lutherans throughout the synod were dealing with missing shingles, downed wires, long lines for gasoline, fallen trees, and lengthy power outages. Those that had been spared asked, “How can we help?”

Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Baldwin has a simple ministry that thrives off of diversity: their monthly book club. It began a few years back as a time for people to discuss a book they had read. What they have gained is a window into other people’s lives and not just in the stories unfolding in the books.

Quilting and knitting groups are all the rage in Lutheran parishes, so the odds are less likely that you'll walk into a church on a Wednesday morning and find a group of women feeding metal plates through a special machine that creates pages for Braille books. But two congregations in our synod have a unique ministry for visually impaired people.

Children are more likely to be involved and stay involved in the church if there are people there (besides their family) who know them and call them by them by their first name. Knowing that piece of information, Pastor Kim Wilson decided to create Blessing Buddies, an intentional ministry to build intergenerational relationships between Sunday School kids and older adults.

St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in West Camp has been served by 47 pastors, worshipped in six different church buildings, produced four seminarians, and seen at least one church fire. And this year, the synod’s oldest congregation—established in 1710—is celebrating its 300th birthday on October 17.

A few years ago, it probably seemed like it would never happen. Emanuel Lutheran Church in Pleasantville was exploring installing photovoltaic solar panels on its roof. The price--$190,000--seemed exorbitant.​
