Reformation 500: What to expect

Here are some hoped-for outcomes for our synodical commemorations in 2017 which serve to focus and guide our planning:

  • We will cultivate a deepened, renewed, and joyful sense of global Lutheran identity for the 21st Century among Lutherans in our Metropolitan New York Synod through special events, resources, learning opportunities, and worship.
  • We will offer bold public witness in various popular media, music, arts, and other formats and venues to non-church audiences about what the Reformation and Lutheran identity mean today, serving as an evangelism strategy in witnessing to the gospel for such a time as this.
  • We will nurture strengthened, reconciling ecumenical and interfaith relationships, both new and renewed, in our synod and in local ministry settings.
  • We will use 2017 commemorations and Reformation themes to address current societal needs and opportunities, such as our ongoing anti-racism efforts and care of creation. Our Bishop in collaboration with our strategic plan’s Sent Committee can discern the issues we might take up in light of Reformation principles, and how we may speak in a Lutheran voice to address the important concerns of our day.

A task force has been formed for the commemoration of the Reformation's 500th anniversary. Learn more about how to make the most of Reformation 500 in your congregation here. For more information, contact Pastor Jonathan Linman.
