Everyone is talking about Artificial Intelligence (AI). Not a day goes by without an executive promising it will make filing your taxes, writing social copy, or planning your grocery list easier. Not a day goes by without someone sounding the alarm about its environmental cost or the moral hazard of outsourcing our thinking to a machine. Not a day goes by without AI content we never asked for — realistic images of rainbow light-up sprinklers, virtual try-on glasses, chatbots that write pastors' sermons or let people "talk" to "Jesus."
AI is everywhere, and it's hard to know what to do about it. Some faith leaders worry it distances us from the divine; others are building the bots themselves.
How, as Lutherans, should we interact with AI? We're launching a reading group to discuss and discern — led by MNYS's Director of Media and Communication, Kevin Ritter-Jung. Over six monthly sessions on Zoom, we'll read Christian and secular perspectives on artificial intelligence. Our first session, Wednesday, August 12, 5:30-6:30pm, asks: "Is AI inevitable?" Sign up here. (Readings will be sent after registering. No need to read everything to attend!)
