On the second Saturday of each month, Christ Lutheran Church in Newburgh, NY opens its doors to parents from across the city, all of them coming for the same thing: diapers for their babies.
Ten years ago, church member Susan Surprise went to buy diapers for a baby shower and was startled by the price. She found herself asking: how could poor and working-class families possibly afford this? That question led her to found the Baby Steps Baby Pantry. Today, Baby Steps serves more than 100 babies each month, providing diapers and wipes free of charge to families who need them.
In this installment of Faces of Faith, we visit the pantry on distribution day — joining volunteers as they hand out supplies and reflect on what it means to show Christlike love to their neighbors. Watch the video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5M_8iz9sIow
We also invite you to bring this story into your congregation. A discussion guide is available for download to help your community reflect on the video together. Download the discussion guide here: https://www.mnys.org/assets/1/6/baby_steps_discussion_guide.pdf
